The In Bed With Art Residency invites local and global artists and curators to participate and collaborate in an artistic project, body of research or performance piece in the bed of sex worker and artist, Nico Athene.
The residency will be held over a period of two weeks from the 16th to 24th of October. Artists can apply to participate from 3 to 48 hours. The applicant’s work and practice can be of any discipline. Established and emerging artists/curators are welcome to apply
The residency highlights the location of the body in a space of practice, and the mechanisms (institutional, economic and moral) through which the claim of Artist or Art Work is realised. Additional themes include the body politic, process as product, relational aesthetics, negotiation, commodification, intimacy, gender, sex work, body positivity, representation, unproductiveness and leisure.
The residency offers a space for mutual creation with the opportunity to live, create closely and intimately with a practicing stranger/s for a contained amount of time. It is open to diverse and cross-disciplinary practices, offering opportunities and processes for creative risk-taking and artistic resistance.
In acknowledgement of mutual art making and reciprocal processes and empowerment, applicants should be willing to engage in the residency’s documentation processes, to produce an online catalogue and future exhibitions, which will also serve to promote the works of the artists in residency.
Nico's bed is situated in a private apartment in an historic building in Cape Town’s city centre. Artists, curators and cultural workers are invited to make use of the space of a 'bedroom' with 'bed' and the 'body of another’, or simply ‘another’, as part of their work, whether they relate directly to the hosting artist or not.
Sleeping, ablution and cooking facilities will be provided for the duration of the residency. Wifi and some basic art materials will also be provided.
Please note that should you be accepted, a fee R300 per day in residence, plus a placeholder deposit of R500 will be required to secure your place. The deposit will be returned to you on the completion of your residency term.
